The Bok Choy Is Going To Kill Me

No, I'm not speaking in code.

The bok choy is LITERALLY going to kill me if I ever eat it again.

As it turns out, I may have an allergy to bok choy.

What is bok choy, you ask? It's Chinese cabbage and it's pretty yummy. I bought some for the first time yesterday and I decided to add it to a soup I was making. I nibbled a bit on it then. Not an hour later I was clawing and scratching at my skin...covered in hives. My arms, legs, back, and neck looked like Freddy Kruger had just given me an all over exfoliation with his razor fingernails.

At the time, I made no connection to the itchiness and the bok choy. Today, I ate the soup with the bok choy in it and my skin is crawling with burning itch. Attractive, no?

Apparently, bok choy is toxic to humans in large quantities which makes me think that some people may have a sensitivity to it even in small quantities. Like maybe, ME. How completely random is that? It's CABBAGE for pete's sake!

Bok choy = EVIL.

Okay, awesome! I can comment now! One time peanut butter made me break out in hives. Just one time. But I knew it was the PB because it happened right after I ate a spoonful of it. However, never did it again. FOOD IS WEIRD, YO.

OMG!!!!!
I have an autoimmune liver disease and certain foods make me itch...like milk and tomatoes and carrots. I ate a brown rice and vegetable (onions, garlic, zucchini, red bell pepper and bok choy)saute last night that and I was itching like a meth addict. It had to be the bok choy or the zucchini because I have already determined that onions, garlic and red bell pepper do not make me itch. I ate some again for lunch today and more itching. I googled "bok choy itching" and found your blog. THANKS!!!!! Now I know I need to avoid bok choy...or zucchini. My guess is that it is the bok choy. GO FIGURE, RIGHT?!?!?!!?

Thank you for posting this. A month ago, I ate at a restaurant and had the first allergic reaction of my life. I thought it was the oysters or fish I consumed. I went to an allergist and I was not the slightest bit allergic to shellfish or 8 other fish types. Last night, I made a yummy stir fry with boy choy and had another reaction but slightly worse than before. I called the allergist and he confirmed it was most likely the bok choy. It's crazy to think I'm allergic to a VEGETABLE! I called the restaurant and talked to the head chief, my fish was served over a bed of bok choy. Official testing in two weeks. Benadryl did the trick but doctor said I need an EpiPen. Thanks for posting.

I ate a bok choy soup yesterday and about 30 mins later vomited. Several years ago I at bok choy at a restaurant and later on that night- probably several hours later I vomited. This makes me wonder if I have a bok choy allergy since it seems the vomiting happens sooner now, like my immune system is senstized to bok choy. Any thoughts internet??

Me too. Made a big pot of 2 heads of it. Anaphylaxis. ER. Waiting for allergist appointment to get tested.

I’ve eaten book choi all my life with no problems. Last year I had in it a soup and I vomited and had awful dizziness and never made the connection two months later, the same thing happened and I thought I had caught a bug I had some in a stir fry last night and here I am on Easter day in bed with dizziness and vomiting. No more book choi for me.
